Kyoto Gosho
(Kyoto Imperial Palace)

After Emperor Kanmu had moved the capital to Kyoto, Gosho had been the imperial palace until the Meiji era for over 1000 years. You can walk around and enjoy the nature inside the palace.
During the Spring and Fall special exhibits, historical buildings such as “Shishinden” and “Seiryoden” where emperors lived and had various special ceremonies can be visited. For more information, please contact the Imperial Household Agency Kyoto Office.

Nijo Castle

Nijo Castle was built as a place to stay in Kyoto for Shogun by Tokugawa Ieyasu (Shogun of the time). Nijo Castle had been very important for the event of “Taiseihoukan” toward the end of Edo era. The last shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu announced returning of political power to the imperial court in Ninomaruden (a building in the castle which is a national treasure) on 10th of October, 1867 which lead to the end of Edo era that lasted for 260 years.
Scenes of the time is exhibited with figures in the building. Hall way called “Uguisu-bari” which makes noise that sounds like a bird when someone walk on to alert trespasser is also a famous part of the castle.

Kyoto Cultural Museum This is the best place to learn about the history of Kyoto. Special exhibit is on 4th floor. Arts and crafts of local artists are on 3rd floor. History and culture of Kyoto can be learned through visual and sound exhibits on the second floor. The “Roji-tenpo” (alley shops) on the ground floor which is designed as traditional house serves various local food and products. Archeological exhibit is in the annex building which used be Kyoto branch of Bank of Japan. The cafe “Orandakan” in the annex is great for a break.

Yasaka Shrine Locally called “Gion-san”, Yasaka shrine is the head shrine of all Gion shrines in Japan. The stone gate at the south entrance is largest of its kind known today. The drooping cherry tree in the park inside the shrine is very famous. One of three most famous festival of Japan “Gion Masturi” can’t be missed.
Honnoji Temple Known as a place where shogun Oda Nobunaga was killed by his own retainer Akechi Mitsuhide. When the event of “Honnoji no hen” happened the temple was burned down. The temple standing today was rebuilt by shogun Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The temple stands quietly at the center of city today.
Rokkakudo Temple Rokkakudo was likely to be built in the year of 587 by Shotokutaishi (a prince of the time). There is a stone called “Hesoishi” (navel stone) in the temple. It is called “Hesoishi” because the temple was built at the center of Kyoto at the time. The temple is known as the origin of traditional Japanese flower arrangement.

Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine It is a shrine of merchants. There is famous spring water. A shrine gate which is partly stuck on the shop next door is interesting to see.
Pontocho
(a famous alley)
Pontocho is a stone paved alley with many restaurants on the side. It is one of the best place to feel the taste of Kyoto. Kamogawa river can be seen from the park on the way.
Kamogawa (Kamo river) It might be relaxing to just sit on the riverside for a while. Lot of couples enjoy the river on holidays.
Nakagyo Post Office The historical neo-renaissance building was built in the Meiji era. It would be nice to send a card with special postmark from here.

Ume no Hana (Tofu and Yuba cuisine) It is in the basement of West 18 building next to Rokkakudo. Traditional Kaiseki served in a Tea room ¥3800〜. Lunch Menu ¥1800〜Great place to enjoy Japanese mood.
Fuka “Namafu”(raw Japanese wheat-gluten bread)
“Namafu”, one of most popular food of Kyoto is arranged with variety of taste such as mugwort, chestnut, bacon, and basil. Products can be sent to anywhere in Japan.
Second House Higashinotoin Shop ( Spagheti and Cake )
Enter the unique color of “noren” (shop curtain), and enjoy the colorful, delicate taste ofcakes and variety of pastas.
Inoda Coffee main shop It opened in 1940. Famous writers such as Junichiro Tanizaki enjoyed the modern style of the coffee shop. Enjoy a cup of coffee outside in its garden.

Saryo Tsujiri (Japanese tea house) It is a green tea desert cafe located on 2nd floor of Japanese tea shop of old standing. Special Tsujiri parfait with green tea cake, ice-cream, jelly and rice cake (¥1155) is fulfilling.

Honke Owariya (buckwheat noodle shop)
Located at Nakagyo-Kurumayacho-Nijo, Honke Owariya is a calm and quiet restaurant. Enjoy its freshly made and cooked noodles. (※Honke Owariya is not on the map above.)
Konnamonja (soy milk donuts and soy milk soft ice-cream)
When walking through the Nishiki market street, this is a place to take a break. Enjoy the soy milk donuts made by old tofu (soy bean curd) shop (¥150 for 8 donuts). Soy milk soft ice-cream is good too.

Souvenir
Masugo Located in the “Kitchen of Kyoto” Nishiki-koji market street. It is a Kyoto style pickles shop of old standing. It’s pickles are popular for there simple taste and fresh flavor of vegetables.
Yojiya Popular souvenir of Kyoto, “Aburatorigami” (facial oil paper) is ¥320 (20 sheets). Other variety of cosmetics of the series are also available.

Ishiguro-Kouho Old style incense shop. Traditional incense is packed in a beautiful porch made with kimono fabric of variety of patterns of season. Enjoy their scent and beautiful design.

Suzuki Shofudo Making everything with paper, it is a very unique shop. Pot and other variety of items made with paper. Facial oil paper with cute frog image is a popular item.

This is a shop of Japanese style fans. There are many variety of traditional fans of silk, hemp, and cotton with a lot of different patterns. Simple design dyed with natural dyes, you will want to keep it for a long time.

Ichiharaheibei-shoten Since 1764, it has been a famous specialty shop of Japanese chop-sticks. There are many variety of chop-sticks of different material and design.One of their many chop-sticks “Miyakobashi” weighs only 7 grams and has a very delicate design.

Shopping
Shin-puh-kan A shopping mall that opened in 2001. It is a mix of fashion, food, and information. There are many shops such as high-sense clothing store, restaurants, cute cafes, and internet cafe where you can search information about Kyoto. There also is a space for Japanese creators to show their work.
Nishiki-ichiba For a long time, there is a market street called “Nishiki-ichiba” that provided fresh food in Kyoto, the capital of 1200 years. People call the market “kitchen of the city” which has served food to the people of the city since the Azuchimomoyama era. For hundreds of years, the market has kept changing for people’s needs. Nishiki-ichiba has a long history.
Shinkyogoku Shinkyogoku is a street with many shops where visitors can find Kyoto’s unique souvenirs. There are shops popular among local people too.
